At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, construction management students are gaining invaluable real-world experience by transitioning from traditional classroom learning to active job sites. According to Gretchen Bockenhauer, the Construction Management Program Coordinator, students dedicate around 14 hours each week to hands-on projects that encompass a variety of construction works, including residential homes, commercial buildings, and road construction.
This practical experience is crucial as it aligns with the needs articulated by industry partners who emphasize the importance of preparing students for immediate employment upon graduation. Bockenhauer noted the program’s robust ties to the construction sector, facilitated through regular career fairs and networking opportunities that attract over 60 companies, many of which provide internships and direct job offers to students.
Alumni like Bockenhauer have observed a significant shift in the job market for graduates. She remarked, “It’s amazing to see students now receiving multiple job offers after coming from a time when jobs were scarce.”
Senior Logan Niesen, who has completed three internships with the same company, highlighted the benefits of the program’s comprehensive curriculum. He stated that every student he knows has at least one full-time job offer before graduation. The program’s structured approach, from foundational coursework to a hands-on capstone project, has helped students develop the necessary skills and confidence in their field.
Niesen expressed pride in being part of the program and emphasized a desire to give back as an alumni to support and enhance the program for future students. Additionally, UW-Platteville’s participation in national competitions, such as the ABC Construction Management Competition, where they ranked fourth, showcases the high caliber of the program.
Another notable aspect is that all instructors are alumni of UW-Platteville, allowing them to bring real-world expertise and insight back into the classroom, further enriching the students’ learning experience.
