The long-awaited trailer for “Bugonia” has officially been unveiled, showcasing the latest collaboration between acclaimed filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone. The pair has a successful history together, having worked on various projects including “The Favourite,” “Poor Things,” and their most recent film, “Kinds of Kindness,” which earned Stone an Oscar nomination as well as a win.
“Bugonia” is a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy “Save the Green Planet!” released in 2003. The plot follows two men who, consumed by conspiracy theories, kidnap a powerful CEO, believing her to be a dangerous alien. Stone stars alongside her “Kinds of Kindness” co-star Jesse Plemons, with appearances from Alicia Silverstone and comedian Stavros Halkias.
The film benefits from the expertise of Ari Aster, known for his direction of horror hits “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” who also recently worked with Stone on the comedy western “Eddington,” which premiered at Cannes amidst mixed reviews. The screenplay, written by Will Tracy—known for his work on “Succession” and the film “The Menu”—marks a significant contribution to this project. Tracy is also heading the upcoming HBO series “The Regime,” a satire starring Kate Winslet, which has received a mix of reviews.
In discussing “Bugonia,” Lanthimos shared his enthusiasm in an interview, highlighting how it was one of the rare scripts he encountered without personal development that immediately resonated with him. He emphasized the excitement of collaborating with familiar faces like Stone and Plemons while delivering a fresh narrative experience.
Additionally, Lanthimos is busy with upcoming projects, including adaptations of Ottessa Moshfegh’s “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” and Jean-Patrick Manchette’s assassin thriller “Fatale.” Meanwhile, Stone is set to take on an untitled romantic comedy directed by her husband, Dave McCary, and Plemons will star alongside Tom Cruise in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming comedy.
It is anticipated that “Bugonia” will make its premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, a traditional venue for Lanthimos’s film debuts, before hitting theaters in October. This project continues to reflect Lanthimos’s unique storytelling style, and fans are eagerly awaiting the film’s release, hoping for another remarkable addition to his filmography.
