Buffalo, N.Y. – The future of Kevyn Adams as the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres is generating significant discussion, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman emphasizing that there is indeed “noise” surrounding his status. On a recent episode of “32 Thoughts,” Friedman indicated that clarity on Adams’ situation may be forthcoming in the next few days following the Sabres’ recent games.

After a challenging start to their road trip, where they faced losses in Philadelphia, Winnipeg, and Calgary, the Sabres managed to turn things around with three consecutive victories, culminating in a win against the Seattle Kraken. However, the team’s current standing remains concerning, as they tie for last place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-14-4 after 32 games, accumulating only 32 points.

Adams took over as general manager in 2020, during which time the Sabres’ performance has been lackluster, failing to secure a playoff berth through a combined record of 178-196-42. The team’s win percentage of .478 ranks them 26th in the NHL over this tenure. After narrowly missing the playoffs last season by just one point, the Sabres have regressed further, posting a win percentage of .497 this season.

Friedman shared insights from his experiences with Adams, noting a shift in mood within the organization despite the recent wins. He suggested that even during the winning streak, Adams appeared troubled, perhaps indicating awareness of tensions or challenges behind the scenes that have yet to be publicly addressed.

Reflecting on recent changes to the Sabres’ front office, Friedman highlighted the hiring of former Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen as a senior advisor. This decision was part of an effort to lend support in various aspects of the hockey department and possibly signal an adjustment in leadership dynamics.

Friedman acknowledged the complexity of internal relationships, especially with Kekalainen’s role perceived as a potential threat to Adams. He noted that managing perceptions in such environments can be challenging, and he argued that issues likely existed before Kekalainen’s arrival.

The Sabres are currently taking a break from practice before returning to action against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday evening. As the team’s performance fluctuates and scrutiny around Adams’ position mounts, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for any developments in the coming days. This moment could very well determine the direction of the franchise moving forward.
