This Sunday, runners from around the world will converge in Downtown Buffalo for the annual Buffalo Marathon, which kicks off at 6:30 a.m. on Delaware Avenue at W. Mohawk. The marathon will wind through the city for 26 miles, culminating at the Buffalo Convention Center on Franklin Street.
Operations Manager Al Longo reported that nearly 1,500 participants are registered for the full marathon, while the half-marathon has attracted close to 4,000 runners. This year, athletes hail from all 50 states and 19 different countries, showcasing the event’s international appeal.
In the lead-up to the main event, Saturday will feature a variety of activities, starting with a 5K run at 8 a.m. and a kids race at 10:30 a.m., followed by the “Diaper Dash” at 11:30 a.m. The day will conclude with the “Ruffalo Stampede,” which sees over 100 dogs participating, adding a unique twist to the festivities.
Al Longo expressed optimism about the weather, noting that an extended period of rain will give way to ideal running conditions on Sunday, with temperatures expected between 45-50 degrees. He highlighted the beauty of the Buffalo area, particularly sites such as Delaware Park and Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, making it an excellent time for visitors to explore.
Road closures will be in effect throughout the weekend to accommodate the event, with certain streets being closed from Friday through Sunday, ensuring safety for participants and spectators alike.
The Buffalo Marathon not only offers a competitive arena for serious runners but also fosters community spirit and showcases the city’s charm, making it a highly anticipated event on the local calendar.
