The Buffalo Bills have strengthened their coaching staff by hiring Pete Carmichael Jr. as their new offensive coordinator, adding a prominent figure from the Sean Payton coaching tree. Carmichael, who previously served as the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator and is now a senior offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos, is expected to be a valuable asset for rookie head coach Joe Brady.
Carmichael’s career in the NFL began in 2000 with the Cleveland Browns as a tight ends coach, followed by a stint as an offensive assistant with the Washington team under Marty Schottenheimer. He later joined Schottenheimer again with the San Diego Chargers, eventually becoming the assistant wide receivers coach. His significant breakthrough came in 2006 when he joined Sean Payton’s inaugural staff with the Saints as quarterbacks coach and was soon promoted to passing game coordinator the following year.
In 2009, Carmichael took the helm as offensive coordinator, succeeding Doug Marrone, and held the position until 2023, showcasing his prowess under both Payton and his successor, Dennis Allen. After parting ways with the Saints following the last season, he transitioned to a role with the Broncos before being tapped by the Bills.
This hiring signals the Bills’ commitment to infusing their offensive strategy with experience and innovation, positioning them to strengthen their performance in the upcoming season. The synergy between Carmichael’s extensive background and Brady’s fresh perspective could yield promising results for the team and its fans.
