D’Angelo Russell’s stint with the Dallas Mavericks has not gone as planned, and recent reports suggest a potential trade before the February 5 deadline. According to Michael Scotto from HoopsHype, the Milwaukee Bucks are open to acquiring a ball handler and shot creator, with Russell and Cam Thomas mentioned as possible trade targets.
With an almost $6 million player option for next season and Russell currently sidelined from the Mavericks’ rotation, the team might seize the chance to move on from the 29-year-old guard. However, doing so may require Dallas to part with one or both of their future second-round picks in 2030 and 2032 to entice Milwaukee to take on Russell’s contract.
Despite the cost, getting off Russell’s player option would benefit the Mavericks, especially considering his lackluster performance this season. His statistics have plummeted, with only one appearance in January, and that was during a game against the Chicago Bulls where head coach Jason Kidd was ejected. Russell’s participation largely stemmed from a familiarity with interim coach Frank Vogel, but it’s clear he has fallen out of favor with the Mavericks, who are favoring younger players like Brandon Williams and Ryan Nembhard.
Though Kidd recently stated that Russell will be ready when called upon, this statement appears to be more PR than reality. The Bucks, on the other hand, find themselves in a unique situation with star player Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future uncertain as the trade deadline approaches. If Milwaukee decides to pursue a significant roster change by trading Antetokounmpo, acquiring a player like Russell could serve to bring both short-term entertainment and a reset for the team.
While Russell may not possess the same agility or decision-making skills as in previous seasons, he retains some capability to contribute offensively when on form. Nevertheless, the interest in him may not be widespread, leading teams to explore options like the Bucks that are looking to revitalize their roster strategy.
In this evolving scenario, Dallas may find themselves with an opportunity to offload Russell, potentially allowing the Mavericks to realign their roster towards a more promising future. The situation remains fluid, and all eyes will be on both teams as the trade deadline approaches.
