COLUMBUS, Ohio — No. 4 ranked Ohio State secured a narrow 21-17 victory over Nebraska, highlighted by a crucial interception from cornerback Jordan Hancock in the final minutes of the game. Quarterback Will Howard threw three touchdown passes, steering the Buckeyes to a bounce-back win after their previous loss to Oregon.

Despite being heavy favorites, Ohio State (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) struggled throughout the game against a determined Nebraska team (5-3, 2-3). Howard commented on the performance, stating, “It wasn’t perfect, but a win’s a win,” and praised the defense for their critical stops in the fourth quarter.

The Cornhuskers stayed competitive, with kicker John Hohl contributing three field goals. A touchdown run by Dante Dowdell gave Nebraska a short-lived lead in the fourth quarter. Ohio State converted only 1 of 10 third downs and faced several challenges, including five punts, a failed fourth down conversion, and a missed field goal.

Dowdell’s touchdown and subsequent 2-point conversion briefly put Nebraska ahead 17-14. However, the Buckeyes reclaimed the lead with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Howard to Quinshon Judkins. On the Huskers’ final drive, they lost momentum due to penalties and pressure, culminating in Hancock’s interception to seal the game.

Nebraska had a promising opportunity earlier in the third quarter when an interception by Malcolm Hartzog Jr. set them up at Ohio State’s 7-yard line, but failed to convert on fourth down.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule acknowledged his team’s improved performance compared to their previous week’s defeat, noting the defense’s strong efforts despite the loss. On the other hand, Ohio State coach Ryan Day commended Nebraska’s competitive spirit.

In terms of individual achievements, Howard connected with Jeremiah Smith for a notable 60-yard touchdown, marking Smith’s eighth receiving touchdown this season, tying him with Cris Carter for the most by a freshman in the program’s history.

As the polls are considered, Ohio State may face scrutiny for their close win against an unranked opponent. The Buckeyes were without starting safety Lathan Ransom and tight end Will Kacmarek due to injuries, while Nebraska’s Rahmir Johnson was sidelined with a concussion.

Next week, Nebraska will host UCLA, and Ohio State will travel to face No. 3 Penn State.
