Ohio State overwhelmed Iowa with a 35-7 victory on Saturday, dropping the Hawkeyes to a 3-2 record (1-1 in Big Ten play). Iowa’s struggles on offense were evident throughout the game, managing just 226 total yards and only 10 first downs, compared to Ohio State’s commanding performance, which included over 400 yards and 21 first downs.
The Buckeyes started strong, scoring first on an 88-yard drive culminating in a touchdown pass from Will Howard to Emeka Egbuka. Iowa had an opportunity to respond but missed a 51-yard field goal attempt. Despite being held scoreless in the first half, Iowa’s defense kept them in the game, forcing crucial turnovers and allowing only a single touchdown, leaving the score at 7-0 at halftime.
However, Ohio State regrouped after the break and dominated the second half. Jeremiah Smith’s impressive one-handed catch and subsequent touchdown extended Ohio State’s lead to 14-0 early in the third quarter. Iowa’s offense struggled to find its rhythm, with quarterback Cade McNamara throwing an interception and losing a fumble, which further hindered their efforts.
Brendan Sullivan replaced McNamara late in the game and managed to score a touchdown, bringing Iowa’s total to 7 points. In contrast, Ohio State continued to score at will, with Egbuka catching his third touchdown pass of the game, solidifying a dominant performance.
Both McNamara and Iowa’s offense faced scrutiny after the game, as they were unable to capitalize on opportunities, leaving Iowa with much to improve as they prepare for their next matchup against Washington at home.
