The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made an important move to bolster their practice squad by signing running back Michael Wiley, while parting ways with tight end Caden Prieskorn. This adjustment comes amid a series of injuries affecting the team’s running back position.
Wiley, who began his professional career as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Commanders in 2024, spent the entire season on their practice squad. In 2025, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs but was released during the final roster cuts after training camp. His collegiate career at the University of Arizona was quite impressive, where he played in 49 games and accumulated 1,712 rushing yards on 339 carries, scoring 16 rushing touchdowns. He also showcased his receiving abilities with 123 receptions for 1,150 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning honors as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention. Wiley will don the number 30 jersey with the Buccaneers.
The Bucs’ running back room has faced challenges recently, particularly with injuries. Starting running back Bucky Irving has been sidelined for two consecutive games due to shoulder and ankle issues, and head coach Todd Bowles confirmed he will not play in the upcoming Monday night game. Furthermore, rookie running back Josh Williams made his NFL debut in Week 5 but suffered a concussion last Thursday, ruling him out for Week 6.
To address these emergencies, the Buccaneers signed Owen Wright to the practice squad, subsequently activating him to serve as a backup behind Rachaad White and Sean Tucker. With Williams’ availability uncertain for Week 7, the likelihood of Wright being called up again increases, especially considering the significant role White and Tucker play in the offense and on special teams.
The addition of Wiley enhances Tampa Bay’s depth at running back, ensuring that the team is well-prepared to navigate the challenges posed by injuries and maintain their competitive edge as they await the return of Irving and Williams. As the Bucs face their upcoming games, this depth could be crucial for their strategy moving forward.
