Buccaneers’ media protocol fuels Week 4 intrigue as Wirfs may return

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ communications team regularly releases a ‘Game Release’ to assist the media in covering upcoming games, including a full depth chart and other essential documents that facilitate reporting on any lineup changes. Recently, however, the Buccaneers, under head coach Todd Bowles, have stirred controversy with a request to the media regarding practice reports.

Greg Auman from Fox Sports reported on social media that the Buccaneers are asking media representatives to adhere to specific protocols, preventing them from revealing which offensive linemen are practicing in which positions. This has led to some speculation, as the depth chart for Week 4 was made public just days prior.

In the latest depth chart, Charlie Heck and Elijah Klein are positioned at right tackle and right guard, reflecting their first-time roles during the Buccaneers’ victory over the New York Jets in Week 3. Additionally, Tristan Wirfs, who is recovering from July knee surgery, is listed as left tackle, suggesting he may make a return for Week 4.

Bowles hinted at the possibility of Wirfs returning during Monday’s media briefing, mentioning that both Wirfs and wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. have resumed practice. Godwin Jr. is working back from an ankle dislocation sustained last season. “We’ve got to see the progression of how they handle everything, and then we’ll make that decision at the end of the week,” Bowles said.

Adding intrigue, Auman followed up with a cryptic tweet suggesting that moving an elite player like Wirfs to a different position would not make sense, further igniting speculation on the team’s strategy.

The Buccaneers’ effort to maintain strict media protocols appears to be a tactical move aimed at preserving an element of surprise ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team has had to adapt continuously due to a string of injuries affecting their roster.

Bowles emphasized the challenges posed by losing key offensive linemen, which makes it imperative for the team to ensure cohesion among new players filling in at different positions. Despite the setbacks—including the absence of veteran receiver Mike Evans due to a hamstring injury—the Buccaneers have impressively started the season with a 3-0 record.

Bowles has praised the positive interactions with quarterback Baker Mayfield but acknowledges that adapting play-calling remains critical given the current personnel challenges. With Both Luke Goedeke and Cody Mauch on injured reserve, the Buccaneers have made strategic signings to bolster their offensive line, bringing in Dan Feeney from the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad and Luke Haggard off their own.

As the Buccaneers prepare to face formidable opponents like Jalen Carter and Za’Darius Smith, their strategic approach and depth of talent will be put to the test. The coaching staff’s ability to adapt and the resilience of their roster will be crucial as they aim to maintain their winning streak amidst adversity.
