Buccaneers’ Irving sidelined; White to shoulder load vs Seahawks

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving will be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks due to a more serious shoulder injury than initially expected, compounded by a sprained foot. This news, confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, follows Irving’s late report of the injury to the team earlier this week. Irving was seen on crutches and wearing a walking boot during practice, leading to his absence from Sunday’s upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Irving has been a standout performer, amassing 430 total yards over the first four games of the season. He notably demonstrated his resilience during last week’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played through the pain and managed to accumulate 165 yards from scrimmage, including a remarkable 72-yard touchdown reception. This performance marked the highest receiving yardage for a Buccaneers running back since Jacquizz Rodgers recorded 102 yards in a game back in 2018.

The Buccaneers have been grappling with a series of injuries this season, affecting key offensive players. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs and wide receiver Chris Godwin are currently dealing with injuries, while right tackle Luke Goedeke and right guard Cody Mauch have faced season-ending situations. Additionally, Mike Evans, one of quarterback Baker Mayfield’s primary targets, is also out due to a hamstring injury sustained in Week 3.

In Irving’s absence, Rachaad White is expected to take on a larger role in the Buccaneers’ backfield during the game against the Seahawks. Ian Rapoport reports that White will receive the “vast majority” of touches, with support from rookie Sean Tucker and undrafted player Josh Williams.

Despite Mayfield missing practice on Wednesday due to minor quad and knee issues, he returned on Thursday and is set to play against Seattle. The quarterback is enjoying a strong start to the season, having completed 60% of his passes for 904 yards, eight touchdowns, and just one interception in the first four games. The team remains hopeful that they can overcome these challenges and continue competing effectively in the league.
