The future of quarterback Bryce Underwood at the University of Michigan is reportedly hanging in the balance as the Wolverines search for a new head football coach following the dismissal of Sherrone Moore. Underwood’s representatives are closely monitoring the situation, as his decision to stay with Michigan could significantly hinge on the choice of the new coaching staff.
Underwood, who previously committed to LSU, flipped to Michigan last year and has landed a lucrative NIL deal worth approximately $5 million for his college career. There is no buyout clause attached to his contract, allowing him the freedom to enter the transfer portal should he choose to do so, particularly if he feels the new coaching hire does not align with his career aspirations.
Reports indicate that Michigan’s decision on a new head coach is crucial for Underwood’s future with the program. The university announced the termination of Moore after finding “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Underwood’s freshman season saw the Wolverines finish with a 9-3 record, culminating in a 27-9 loss to Ohio State. Completing 61.1% of his passes, he threw for 2,229 yards, contributing nine touchdowns along with six interceptions, while also rushing for 323 yards and five touchdowns.
While the team’s reliance on its strong ground game, led by running backs Jordan Marshall and Justice Haynes, contributed to their success, Underwood’s raw talent continues to draw attention. Despite his fluctuating performance in his inaugural year, he is still highly regarded as an elite prospect who would attract interest from other prestigious programs if he opts for a transfer.
Currently, associate head coach Biff Poggi is acting as the interim head coach and will lead the Wolverines into the Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31. The challenge of finding a long-term head coaching solution may be complicated, as several top candidates have already accepted positions elsewhere, leaving Michigan in a precarious position as they aim to secure a leader capable of retaining talent like Underwood.
