Bryce Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman, left for Arizona on Saturday with a triumphant feeling after hitting a fifth-inning homer against the Toronto Blue Jays during his final Grapefruit League game. The home run was particularly significant as it marked Harper’s first spring training blast since 2022, a moment that came off Blue Jays pitcher Connor Seabold in a game that ended with the Phillies at 5-7.

As Harper prepares for Team USA’s camp ahead of the World Baseball Classic (WBC), he expressed confidence in his swing. He acknowledged the challenge of transitioning from exhibition games to the intense competition of the WBC, which he likened to playoff-level intensity. “It’s going to be tough,” Harper noted, pointing out that many players will be on their game, especially those who have participated in winter ball from Latin America or Mexico.

In the spring training games, Harper has posted a .375 batting average, going 3-for-8, including two doubles, alongside three walks and three strikeouts. He emphasized the importance of maintaining his composure, recognizing that the game speeds up significantly during competition. “Just trying to stay as calm as I can,” he stated, highlighting the balance between excitement and focus.

Alongside Harper, teammates Brad Keller and Kyle Schwarber boarded the flight to Arizona, where Team USA will participate in exhibition games against the Giants and Rockies before entering pool play against Brazil, Great Britain, Mexico, and Italy. Notably, Taijuan Walker and Aaron Nola are set to pitch for Mexico and Italy, respectively.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson commented on the readiness of players preparing for the WBC, noting that ten members from the Phillies’ 40-man roster are slated to participate. “They put a lot of work in, not only in the offseason, but some extra work here in spring training,” Thomson remarked, highlighting the effort put forth by the players.

Harper also shared his anticipation for potentially facing some of his teammates in the tournament, specifically mentioning Cristopher Sánchez, a pitcher he has never faced, even in practice. Acknowledging Sánchez’s impressive skill, Harper stated, “You better pick and choose what you want to swing at. One of the best in baseball right now.”

Reflecting on his past successes in international competitions, Harper recounted his experiences with the U.S. youth teams that earned gold medals in the 2008 and 2009 Pan American Championships. He believes the current Team USA has the potential for similar achievements. “We got a really good group of guys, really good pitchers and position players, great staff. Just really looking forward to it,” Harper said.

In related news, Jesús Luzardo pitched a successful simulated game at the Phillies complex on Saturday, with Thomson praising his performance. Luzardo is expected to start against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, further contributing to the team’s preparations for the upcoming season and international play.
