Bryan Woo: From Cal Poly to MLB All-Star Spotlight

Former Cal Poly pitcher Bryan Woo is set to make his Major League Baseball All-Star debut this Tuesday night, representing the American League while pitching for the Seattle Mariners. Woo, a talented right-handed pitcher from Alameda, California, has made remarkable progress in his third year with the Mariners, boasting an impressive 8-4 record and a 2.77 earned run average (ERA) this season. Notably, he is one of only two pitchers in the Majors to maintain a sub-3.00 ERA while achieving over 100 strikeouts and allowing 20 or fewer walks.

Woo’s journey to the All-Star game has been filled with hard work and dedication, a sentiment echoed by his father, Clayton Woo, who expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments. Bryan played three seasons at Cal Poly before being drafted in 2021 and has now become the sixth Mustang to earn an All-Star selection, joining the ranks of notable players including Ozzie Smith and Mitch Haniger, the latter being the last Mustang honored back in 2018.

As the All-Star festivities unfold at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, fans and family alike are excited to see Woo take the field, celebrating the culmination of years of effort and determination. Interestingly, Cal Poly Baseball has recently achieved success as well, clinching their first Big West title since 2014, reflecting the growing prominence of the program and its players in the professional realm.

This moment is not just a significant achievement for Bryan Woo but also a testament to the dedication shown by Cal Poly’s baseball program in nurturing talent that can succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
