Associate coach Joe Sacco has been appointed as the interim head coach. Sacco, who previously served as head coach for the Colorado Avalanche and has been part of the Bruins’ coaching staff since 2014, has ample NHL experience, having played 13 seasons in the league.
The Bruins’ poor performance this season has raised concerns about their consistency and the overall direction of the team. Sweeney emphasized the organization’s desire to meet fan expectations and believes Sacco’s experience will help refocus the players on the necessary efforts for success.
Montgomery, who achieved an impressive record of 120-41-23 during his tenure with the Bruins, was recognized as the NHL coach of the year last season. His tenure, however, was marked by playoff disappointments, including back-to-back exits at the hands of the Florida Panthers. Montgomery previously overcame personal challenges, including struggles with alcohol, which he publicly addressed during his award acceptance speech.
Notably, this coaching change comes amid the Bruins’ struggles offensively and defensively, ranking last in goals per game and nearly at the bottom for goals allowed. The team’s goaltending situation has also been under scrutiny, especially after trading away Linus Ullmark, which disrupted a previously effective goalie tandem with Jeremy Swayman, who has faced challenges this season.
