Bruins Chase Turnaround Against Avalanche as Coach Calls for Tighter Defense

The Boston Bruins are off to a mixed start in the 2025-26 season, currently holding a 3-2-0 record with both losses narrowly decided by one goal. Despite an uneventful offseason, the season’s opening can at least be seen as better than some had anticipated. However, frustration is brewing among players and coaching staff following back-to-back defeats that have showcased the team’s vulnerabilities.

Head coach Marco Sturm expressed his dissatisfaction after the Bruins’ 6-5 loss against the Golden Knights, emphasizing the need for a more disciplined approach to their game. “It’s a mindset going in…I don’t want to play that open game,” he remarked, highlighting his preference for a more defensive strategy. As the Bruins prepare to take on the formidable Colorado Avalanche, who hold a strong 4-0-1 record, Sturm’s concerns may be exacerbated. The Avalanche recently secured a convincing 4-1 victory over the Blue Jackets and possess potent offensive threats, particularly in Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.

Historically, however, the Bruins have had success against the Avalanche, winning their last three meetings, with an active eight-game point streak that spans back to 2022.

Key players to watch for the Bruins include David Pastrnak, who is expected to step up during this challenging stretch after expressing concern over his line’s performance. He has impressive career numbers against the Avalanche, with 14 goals and 22 points in 18 matchups. Mikey Eyssimont, originally from the Denver area, will also be returning home and has seen a promotion to the second line, where he could increase his offensive output after a productive game against the Golden Knights.

Pavel Zacha will be central to the Bruins’ offensive endeavors as well, particularly as he joins Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm on the top line. The Bruins hope to see more consistent scoring from Zacha, who has a history of contributing against the Avalanche.

On the Avalanche’s side, Martin Necas has been a standout performance, recording points in all five games so far, while defenseman Sam Malinski has also been effective, displaying a knack for controlling game pace and creating scoring opportunities.

As the Bruins take on the Avalanche, they will be looking to rediscover their form and put the losses behind them. With a roster full of capable talent eager to step up, fans have reason to remain hopeful for a turnaround.
