The prospect of trading an NFL head coach is a rarity, but discussions around Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski suggest it could happen this offseason. Sports Illustrated’s NFL insider Conor Orr recently reported that there is increasing chatter within the league about the possibility of a trade involving Stefanski, although he noted that the likelihood of such a move is not expected anytime soon.
While trading a head coach presents significant logistical challenges, it has occurred in the past, the most recent example being the Denver Broncos’ trade with the New Orleans Saints, which included first-round and second-round picks for Sean Payton in 2023. Historical contexts also reveal that the New York Jets have successfully orchestrated coaching trades before, notably when they dealt four picks to the Patriots for Bill Parcells in 1997 and later traded Bill Belichick back to New England in 2000.
Stefanski has been with the Browns for nearly six seasons and has led the team to the playoffs twice, notably in 2020 and 2023, earning the NFL Coach of the Year award for his efforts during those years. However, the last two seasons have seen a struggle for both him and the team, culminating in a dismal 3-14 record in 2024—tying for the worst league record—and a challenging 4-12 record as they head into Week 18 of the current season.
Amid the swirling rumors, several Browns players have publicly supported Stefanski. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders emphasized that the team is not focused on external opinions, reiterating the respect players have for their coach. “He’s our coach,” Sanders stated. “We view him as the same as we view him the first week. We got the utmost respect for him. That’s more media stuff, that’s more outside noise.”
Defensive leader Myles Garrett also weighed in, expressing a strong desire for the team’s success, regardless of who is coaching. He noted, “I want things to be successful, however that looks… If we’re thinking anything other than winning — tanking or rebuilding — that’s not me.”
As the offseason approaches, the dynamics surrounding coaches and their futures remain a focal point of both player sentiment and league speculation, making it a compelling narrative to follow. The Browns, despite their struggles, continue to maintain a strong sense of unity and determination moving forward, showcasing the resilience that defines sports teams in challenging times.
