Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will not return this season following a ruptured Achilles injury, as confirmed by the team on Monday.
Watson was injured in the second quarter during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. While attempting a quarterback draw, his right leg buckled, causing him to fall to the ground.
He received immediate attention on the field in Cleveland before being carted off. Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over as quarterback after Watson’s departure.
This season has been a challenge for Watson, as he ranked last among all quarterbacks in quarterback rating prior to the injury. He was also near the bottom for expected points added and held the second-lowest passer rating among players who have played in at least six games.
The Browns’ passing attack had struggled, sitting last in both yards per game and yards per attempt, while also leading the league in sacks allowed.
Watson’s availability has been a persistent concern since joining the Browns. He played in only six games last season and the year before, largely due to an 11-week suspension stemming from lawsuits involving allegations of sexual assault and misconduct by 22 women.
In the six games leading up to Week 7, Watson had thrown for 1,020 yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He exited the latest game after completing 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards.
The Browns signed Watson to a five-year, $230 million contract in March 2022 after trading for him. His contract is fully guaranteed and includes a no-trade clause.
If the Browns decide to release him after this season, they would still be obligated to pay Watson $92 million.
