The Cleveland Browns are exploring the potential of promoting from within as they search for their next head coach. One promising candidate is offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who is set to be interviewed for the role on Thursday, as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

At just 33 years old, Rees has already made a significant impact in his coaching career. He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Browns following a successful stint as the team’s tight ends coach in 2023. Prior to joining the Browns, Rees served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama, contributing to the program during its final year under legendary coach Nick Saban. He also previously held the same positions at Notre Dame from 2020 to 2022.

Rees has attracted interest from top college programs seeking head coaches, with reports indicating that he was interviewed by both Penn State and Michigan in recent months.

Browns General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledged Rees’s skills and reputation during a recent press conference, noting, “Tommy, he’s a very talented young coordinator. He’s held in very high regard, not just in college football, but across the NFL. But again, those are discussions that we have to continue to have.”

In addition to Rees, Cleveland has also reached out to interview other candidates, including Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde. This search reflects the team’s commitment to finding the right leadership to elevate their performance in the upcoming season as they look to build on their recent developments.

Rees’s experience and familiarity with the team’s system position him as a strong candidate, potentially bringing a renewed sense of optimism and innovation to the Browns’ coaching staff.
