Three brothers from Tampa Bay achieved a remarkable milestone recently by winning the FAA’s student airport design competition, and they took the opportunity to visit Tampa International Airport (TPA) for a special meet-and-greet with the airport’s planning and development team. Shaan, 16; Sahil, 15; and Krishiv Patel, 13, proudly presented their award-winning design on January 10.

During their visit, the brothers were thrilled to receive an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of TPA, which included the Airport Operations Center, the SkyCenter One office building, and insights into the airfield and baggage handling systems. For the Patel brothers, avid fans of aviation, this experience was a dream come true.

“I’ve always loved creating model airports and collecting miniature planes,” Shaan shared, expressing his passion for aviation. “Now that planes are a significant part of my life, it is amazing to be here and see everything we’ve learned about firsthand.”

The FAA’s Airport Design Challenge invites students from K-12 to design virtual airports using the popular game Minecraft, guided by aerospace and engineering professionals. The competition divides participants into categories based on grade levels, and the Shah brothers were recognized for their exceptional entry in the Primary Airport design category for grades 7-12, competing under the creative team name “Aviator Bros.”

Participants in the challenge are encouraged to engage with aviation experts and collaborate with fellow designers to deepen their understanding of the aviation industry. While focusing on local airports can enhance learning about FAA specifications, the program also includes modules on airport layout, lighting, pavement, and innovative ideas for growth.

Opting to base their design on Tampa International Airport, the Patel brothers introduced unique elements to their submission, envisioning an airport equipped with distinctive restaurants, a rooftop garden, an observation deck, and efficient access to a cargo port designed for delivery drones.

This inspiring story not only highlights the creativity and innovation of young minds but also underscores the importance of engaging the next generation in the aerospace field, fostering a future filled with possibilities in aviation.
