LOS ANGELES — The Indiana Hoosiers football team has showcased a unique familial bond at the quarterback position this season, proudly featuring Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza as the starter, along with his brother, Alberto, serving as the backup.
The Hoosiers, currently holding a perfect record of 13-0, welcomed Alberto to the team when their coaching staff, while at James Madison University (JMU), recognized his potential and brought him over to Bloomington. The former three-star recruit made a quick transition to Indiana, having just won a state championship in Florida before visiting the university.
Alberto Mendoza excelled as a two-year starter for Christopher Columbus High School, boasting an impressive 26-2 record, including a perfect 10-0 postseason that earned him back-to-back state championships. His high school career stats include 4,596 passing yards, a completion percentage exceeding 70%, and an impressive tally of 57 touchdowns against only 12 interceptions. His former quarterbacks coach, Tino Sunseri, referred to him as a “hidden gem” in his recruiting class.
Fernando Mendoza has credited his brother’s support as a pivotal factor in his success, especially during his Heisman campaign. He noted that having Alberto by his side allowed him to better grasp the “nuances and intricacies” of the Indiana offense. The bond they share remains strong, as they frequently review game film and practice together, something Fernando values deeply.
In a heartfelt moment during his Heisman acceptance speech, Fernando acknowledged Alberto’s invaluable role, stating, “And to my lifelong teammate, Alberto, my brother and closest confidante, the one I trust more than anybody to get through a tough day, tough play, I love you bro.”
During the 2025 season, the Mendoza brothers made history by becoming the first siblings to throw touchdown passes in the same game for the same team since Brandon and Austin Allen in 2015. They accomplished this during a decisive 56-9 victory over Kennesaw State.
The duo not only made headlines for their familial ties but also displayed their prowess on the field, with both scoring touchdowns in five different games throughout the season. In his limited playing time, Alberto Mendoza showcased his talent, completing 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception in addition to rushing for 184 yards and a score over the season.
