Bronze Medal Shake-Up: IOC Reassigns Chiles’ Medal to Romanian Gymnast

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal initially awarded to Jordan Chiles in the women’s floor final will now be given to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.

In their statement, the IOC confirmed that they are in discussions with the Romanian National Olympic Committee (NOC) regarding the reallocation ceremony and are also coordinating with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee on the matter of Chiles returning the bronze medal.

Despite the medal reassignment, the 23-year-old Chiles will leave Paris with a gold medal from the U.S. women’s team event.

USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee jointly stated that the inquiry regarding the Difficulty Value of Chiles’ floor routine was made in good faith, following FIG regulations to ensure proper scoring.

Initially, Chiles finished in fifth place with a score of 13.666. Following an inquiry filed by her coach, her score was adjusted to 13.766, allowing her to move up to third place, surpassing Barbosu and fellow Romanian gymnast Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.

However, five days after the event, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Chiles’ inquiry was submitted after the one-minute time limit, specifically one minute and four seconds after her routine. As a result, Chiles’ original score of 13.666 was reinstated, leading to an amendment in the final results. The FIG has confirmed that Barbosu will now be recognized as the third-place finisher.

Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the gold medal with a score of 14.166, while American Simone Biles secured the silver with a score of 14.133.
