Bronze Medal Drama: IOC Reallocates Chiles’ Medal to Romania

In an announcement made on Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the bronze medal awarded to Jordan Chiles in the women’s floor final will be reallocated to Romania’s Ana Barbosu.

The IOC stated, “We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.” While Chiles, 23, will depart Paris with a gold medal from the U.S. women’s team event, she will lose the bronze, which she had initially secured after an inquiry regarding her routine’s difficulty value.

Chiles had originally finished fifth in the final with a score of 13.666. Following an inquiry filed by her coach that raised her score to 13.766, she moved up to third place, surpassing Barbosu and her teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. However, five days later, the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that the inquiry was submitted four seconds past the allowed time frame of one minute, resulting in the reinstatement of Chiles’ original score.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has confirmed that the results of the floor final will be adjusted, placing Barbosu in third position. The gold medal was awarded to Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade with a score of 14.166, while American Simone Biles claimed the silver with a score of 14.133.
