A significant fire in an apartment building on Wallace Avenue in the Allerton section of the Bronx left dozens of families homeless and injured at least eight people, including firefighters. The fire erupted early Friday morning and continued for approximately 12 hours before it was brought under control around 2 p.m.

The blaze caused extensive damage, particularly to the upper floors where flames, exacerbated by strong winds, destroyed all apartments on the top level and burned through the roof. “Initially we had fire companies inside, conducting searches, removing people and attempting to fight the fire. The fire had too much headway; it’s extremely dangerous to our firefighters,” stated Chief of Department John Esposito from the FDNY.

Residents described chaotic scenes as they evacuated the building after smelling smoke, with one resident, Jenny, recalling a need to quickly grab personal belongings before leaving amidst the confusion. Fortunately, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that there were no life-threatening injuries resulting from the incident, which Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker deemed “a miracle” under the circumstances.

Residents had reportedly been without heating for some time, leading some to turn on their stoves and ovens to stay warm against the cold, which may have contributed to the fire’s ignition. Investigators are currently looking into these prior heating complaints made through the city’s 311 service.

In response to the disaster, the Red Cross has stepped in to assist those displaced. A temporary shelter has been set up at PS 76, where around 262 individuals from 95 households are receiving emergency assistance, including lodging.

Community support is encouraged, with donations of new clothing, non-perishable food, and essential items being accepted at several local offices from Monday to Friday. This spirit of community will undoubtedly help those affected begin the recovery process.

While this event is tragic, the resilience shown by the community and the prompt response from emergency services illuminate a path towards rebuilding and recovery for those impacted.
