Subway service has returned to normal just in time for the morning rush hour following an incident on Sunday where a 4 train became detached in the Bronx. This unexpected disruption briefly halted service and required the evacuation of numerous passengers, as confirmed by transit officials.
The train decoupled shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of East 149th Street and Grand Concourse, with one car separating from the main body and getting stuck on the tracks within the tunnel. A conductor present at the scene reported that around 60 passengers needed to be evacuated from the train.
Responding promptly to the situation, firefighters and MTA personnel assisted passengers in exiting the train safely, while officers from the NYPD provided support at the station. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries related to the incident.
As MTA officials investigated the cause of the derailment, downtown 4 and 5 trains experienced significant delays, impacting the evening rush. Passengers reported having to seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.
