Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James is set to join the team on their upcoming trip from Monday through November 6, before transitioning between the active roster and the G League affiliate, South Bay Lakers. Lakers coach JJ Redick noted that these plans may evolve over time.
The Lakers recently made headlines by defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in their season opener, marking a historic moment as LeBron James and Bronny James became the first father-son pair to compete together in an NBA game. Although Bronny was dressed for the game against the Phoenix Suns, he did not play in the Lakers’ victory.
Following their matchup against the Sacramento Kings, the Lakers will continue their road trip to teams in Phoenix, Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit, and Memphis.
Redick emphasized the adaptable nature of their plans, stating that player availability can shift rapidly. He indicated that the strategy for Bronny to alternate between the Lakers and South Bay has been in place since the beginning, with collaboration between management, including General Manager Rob Pelinka.
LeBron James, who has spent a significant portion of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is set to return to Ohio, where Bronny was born in 2004, next Wednesday.
The South Bay Lakers kick off their G League season on November 9 against the Salt Lake City Stars, following the upcoming G League draft on Saturday and training camps scheduled until November 7.
Sources revealed that during Bronny’s pre-draft discussions, the idea of G League play was positively received, with Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul advocating for a standard contract rather than a two-way deal. Bronny was drafted by the Lakers in the second round, selected with the 55th overall pick, as he and Paul expressed their commitment to the development process.
LeBron reiterated the Lakers’ connection with their G League affiliate, looking forward to Bronny’s growth, whether in the NBA or the G League. He stressed the importance of accountability among teammates to foster improvement collectively.
Players drafted in the mid to late second round typically engage with G League teams to gain valuable experience. In the 2023-24 season, 23 out of 28 second-round draftees played in the G League.
Pelinka and Redick are focused on establishing a strong synergy between the Lakers and South Bay. Redick, who aims to implement an elite player development program, sees Bronny’s journey as a significant opportunity to demonstrate this approach. He praised Bronny’s skills and potential as they work on developing their overall program.
South Bay Lakers have also brought in a new head coach this season, hiring Zach Guthrie to replace Dane Johnson.
