The representation of Latina reporters in the NFL has been limited in the past, but recent years have seen a gradual increase. This season marked a significant milestone for the Denver Broncos, who for the first time hired Elisa Hernandez, a team reporter from Los Angeles.
Despite the Broncos’ diverse fan base and their ongoing outreach to Latino communities, the team had not previously employed a Latina in this role. Hernandez’s appointment is seen as a step forward in enhancing the team’s connection with Latino fans, supported by events celebrating Hispanic heritage, such as the recent Vamos Broncos event held during a home game at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium.
Hernandez shared her thoughts with CBS Colorado, expressing that it feels surreal to fulfill a role tied to the team she has loved since childhood. Raised in a family of four in Los Angeles, she helped her father with cleaning jobs, having a deep understanding of her parents’ struggles as immigrants from El Salvador during the Salvadoran Civil War.
Growing up in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, Hernandez became a Broncos fan, as her city lacked an NFL team, further solidifying her connection to the franchise.
Her journey to becoming a team reporter was not straightforward. After graduating from USC, she saw many of her peers quickly land on-camera roles. Instead of disheartening her, this motivated Hernandez to explore the industry’s behind-the-scenes aspects, beginning her career as a ticker operator at the NFL, which involved managing the scrolling text providing updates during broadcasts.
Determined to establish herself, Hernandez worked with various sports teams and networks, including notable stints at the NFL Network and Telemundo Deportes, and she recently served as an in-arena host for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hernandez highlighted a memorable experience hosting the first Salvadoran night at Dodger Stadium, emphasizing the importance of representation for young girls who can see themselves reflected in her achievements.
As a first-generation Salvadoran, Hernandez aims to break barriers and inspire others by becoming the Broncos’ first Salvadoran team reporter. She recognizes the impact of her position and dedicated effort to represent her culture and heritage, making it clear that her journey is for her community and family.
