Broncos Linebacker Reveals Cancer Diagnosis Sparked by Routine Drug Test

Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton recently shared a heartfelt message about how a random NFL drug test played a pivotal role in his diagnosis of testicular cancer. On Monday, Singleton revealed that elevated levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), detected during the league-mandated screening, prompted him to seek medical advice, ultimately leading to his diagnosis and successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumor.

Following the Broncos’ Week 10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, Singleton underwent surgery on Friday after consulting with a urologist, Dr. Andrew Zilavy, who confirmed the presence of a tumor. He emphasized the importance of being vigilant about one’s health, urging fans and fellow players to listen to their bodies and pursue medical evaluations when necessary.

In a statement addressing his teammates and coaches, Singleton expressed gratitude, stating, “I stood before our team as a lucky man.” He took time to highlight the positive aspects of his situation, as early detection has allowed for an excellent prognosis for his recovery. “While we are still awaiting some additional test results, I fully expect to return to the field in the coming weeks,” he said.

Singleton, at 31 years old, is in his fourth season with the Broncos and has made significant contributions on the field, with 89 tackles and one sack recorded so far this season. He garnered attention earlier in his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he achieved two consecutive 120-tackle seasons. After joining Denver on a one-year deal in 2022, he quickly established himself, leading to a three-year, $18 million extension.

As Singleton looks ahead, he remains hopeful about returning to play soon, embodying resilience and dedication both to his team and to his health. His experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular health screenings, potentially inspiring others to prioritize their well-being.
