Broncos Bet on Their Guys as RB Depth Is Tested

The Denver Broncos have made an impressive start to the 2025 season, claiming victory in nine out of their first eleven games. This strong performance places them in a prime position to secure the AFC West title and maintain a substantial likelihood of earning the first seed in the conference. Achieving the top seed would ensure at least one home playoff game while providing homefield advantage throughout the postseason, which is a significant benefit in the playoffs.

Despite their successes, the Broncos have faced challenges with injuries to key starters, including Patrick Surtain II, JK Dobbins, Alex Singleton, and Ben Powers. While Surtain, Singleton, and Powers are expected to return soon, the loss of Dobbins is particularly concerning for the team. He suffered a foot injury during Week 10 on Thursday Night Football due to an illegal hip-drop tackle, which could sideline him for the remainder of the season. This injury is a frustrating setback for the Broncos, as Dobbins was performing exceptionally well prior to the injury.

With Dobbins likely out, the team’s running back situation has become precarious. The Broncos had shown interest in bolstering their running back lineup during their bye week, notably considering Dameon Pierce after his release from the Houston Texans. However, he opted to join the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad instead. Currently, the top options for the Broncos’ backfield are RJ Harvey, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Tyler Badie, all of whom are relatively unproven and of smaller stature.

The decision to not pursue any free agents, such as Jamaal Williams or Zack Moss, raises questions about the team’s strategy. With six regular-season games remaining, including matchups against the Washington Commanders and several divisional rivals, the Broncos need to secure additional wins to clinch the AFC West. Coach Sean Payton’s reliance on the current roster may prove risky, given the stakes involved.

There is hope that the Broncos can navigate these challenges and maintain a strong run game to continue their path toward a successful postseason. Fans and analysts alike remain optimistic that the team’s resilience and focus on “their guys” will help them overcome this hurdle and push toward their goals this season.
