Brock Nelson Set for First Return to Islanders with Avalanche

Brock Nelson is poised to make his first appearance against the New York Islanders since his trade to the Colorado Avalanche in March. Known for his professionalism on the ice and humble demeanor off it, Nelson’s transition from the Islanders came with a mix of emotions as he prepares for this pivotal matchup.

During a recent practice at Family Sports Center, Nelson expressed anticipation about reconnecting with former teammates. “There’s a lot of guys that I haven’t seen since the trade happened. It will be nice to hang out with them today,” he said, reflecting on more than a decade spent with the Islanders. The trade saw Nelson head to Colorado in exchange for defenseman Oliver Kylington, forward prospect Calum Ritchie, along with conditional picks for the 2026 and 2028 drafts. Shortly after the trade, he signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension with the Avalanche.

Nelson acknowledged the emotional complexity of switching teams after such a long tenure with one franchise. “It took a bit for sure,” he admitted. “I still keep tabs on all the guys. I still wish them the best. Obviously maybe not for tomorrow.” His sentiment displays a deep appreciation for the relationships he built during his time with the Islanders.

Despite the upheaval, Nelson did not dwell heavily on the trade. He emphasized that the transition required time to readjust, but he remains focused on the present with Colorado and is optimistic about the future. “It’s just day-by-day now,” he explained, highlighting his commitment to embrace his new opportunity.

Interestingly, Nelson cited his conversations with Zach Parise, a former Islander who also played a significant role for the Avalanche, as influential in his decision to stay in Colorado. Parise shared insights about his positive experiences with the Avalanche organization, which helped Nelson solidify his commitment despite external speculation regarding his future with the team. “There was a lot of reports that said I wasn’t coming back here. I think people were kinda speculating. It wasn’t true,” he clarified.

Nelson’s focus now lies on competing for the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche, conveying optimism about his new chapter. As he gears up to face his former team, his journey reflects the intriguing dynamics of professional sports, where change can foster new beginnings and opportunities.
