Broadway’s elite turned out in style for the annual Tony Awards Nominee Luncheon on Monday afternoon, held at the renowned Rainbow Room high above Rockefeller Center. This year’s celebration honored the newly nominated actors, directors, producers, and artisans in anticipation of the June 8 ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, with Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in Wicked, serving as host.
The event, sponsored by Cunard, was a blend of elegance and camaraderie, featuring a lively cocktail hour that transitioned into a sumptuous three-course lunch, culminating in a group photo and an exciting gift of cruises for all attendees.
The celebratory atmosphere was evident as 193 past Tony Award nominees mingled with newcomers, including 28 first-time acting nominees out of 42 total. George Clooney, nominated for his performance in Good Night, and Good Luck, drew attention in a stylish blue suit and Broadway League cap. He engaged in warm conversations with celebrated actors such as four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, who is receiving a lifetime achievement award at this year’s ceremony, and shared laughs with Tom Francis, nominated for his role in Sunset Boulevard.
Darren Criss, celebrated for his first-ever Tony nomination for best actor in a musical for Maybe Happy Ending, was also in high spirits. He relished the delicious canapés and shared a joyful moment with Louis McCartney, a star from Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Criss expressed the significance of the occasion, stating, “It feels pretty damn good…to be in a category at this level with a lot of these people is hugely exciting.”
The Tony Awards continue to foster a sense of community and celebration within the theater world, and this year’s nominee luncheon exemplified that spirit beautifully. With fresh faces among its ranks and long-standing talents celebrated, this year’s awards promise to be a thrilling showcase of artistry and achievement in Broadway theater.
