Broadway Welcomes Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach in ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ Premiere!

Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are set to make their Broadway debuts in “Dog Day Afternoon,” a stage adaptation of the acclaimed 1975 film written by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis. Both actors, who have received Emmy Awards for their performances in the popular series “The Bear,” will bring new life to this gripping narrative rooted in a real-life 1972 bank robbery and hostage crisis.

The adaptation presents a vivid scenario, transporting audiences back to the intense summer of 1972 in New York City—a period marked by the Vietnam War, Watergate scandal, and a society grappling with turmoil. The play invites viewers to witness a botched bank heist that spirals into chaos, highlighting the desperate motivations behind a man’s dramatic actions that captivate the nation.

In this production, Bernthal will portray Sonny Amato, a character originally depicted by Al Pacino, while Moss-Bachrach takes on the role of Sal DeSilva, originally played by John Cazale. The stage will be steered by director Rupert Goold.

Both Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach have showcased their impressive talent in “The Bear,” with Bernthal earning acclaim for his guest appearance and Moss-Bachrach for his supporting role. Their ongoing success in television will only enhance the excitement surrounding their Broadway venture.

The original “Dog Day Afternoon,” directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Frank Pierson, was a critical success, receiving six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and winning for Best Original Screenplay. This new stage adaptation is produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, which is known for several successful adaptations like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Beetlejuice.”

The anticipation surrounding “Dog Day Afternoon” not only underscores the importance of both actors in the theatrical landscape but also reflects the ongoing trend of adapting powerful cinematic stories for the stage, providing a fresh perspective on cherished narratives. With both Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach bringing their unique talents to the project, audiences can look forward to a compelling and emotionally charged performance.
