Ken Page, a celebrated stage and screen actor known for his iconic roles in Broadway productions and animated films, has passed away at the age of 70. His death was announced by talent agent Todd M. Eskin of ATB Talent Agency, although specific details regarding his passing have not been disclosed.
Page was well-recognized for his portrayal of Old Deuteronomy in the Broadway hit “Cats,” which premiered in 1982 and enjoyed a lengthy run. He also voiced the memorable character Oogie Boogie in Tim Burton’s 1993 animated classic, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” This role endeared him to generations of viewers, as he played the villain plotting to take over the holidays.
Elaine Paige, who starred alongside him in “Cats,” expressed her sorrow on social media, noting that Page has “gone to the heaviside layer” and described him as a “lovely, kind, talented man.” Tim Burton also shared a touching tribute, reflecting on Page’s generous spirit and immense talent.
Page began his Broadway journey in “The Wiz,” where he played the Cowardly Lion. He later took on the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson in “Guys and Dolls,” alongside Robert Guillaume. A key highlight of his career was his performance in the original cast of the musical “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” for which he won a Drama Desk Award.
In 2010, Page returned to the role of Old Deuteronomy at the Muny in St. Louis, where he was praised for his portrayal as a “looming gentle presence.” His work as Oogie Boogie, a character encased in a burlap sack with bugs, solidified his legacy, particularly through his memorable song that outlined his villainous intentions regarding Santa Claus.
Beyond his Broadway achievements, Page had notable film roles in “Torch Song Trilogy” and “Dreamgirls.” He made appearances in television series such as “Family Matters,” “Touched by an Angel,” and “Charmed.” He also reprised his role as Oogie Boogie for various video games and events, including the film’s 30th-anniversary concert in 2023.
