Bristol Bears have confirmed the continuation of Fijian international back row Viliame Mata’s contract for the upcoming season. Since joining the club from Edinburgh in 2024, Mata has made a notable impact, appearing in 28 matches and showcasing his remarkable strength and physicality on the field.
Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, the versatile number eight has earned 38 caps for Fiji, scoring 11 tries over two seasons with Pat Lam’s side. Notably, he made headlines with a first-half double during the Investec Champions Cup victory over Scarlets in December.
Director of Rugby Pat Lam expressed his delight at Mata’s decision to extend his stay with the Bears, emphasizing his crucial role in the team’s aspirations. “In his first season, we returned to the top four, and this year we are firmly on track to compete for silverware,” Lam stated. He commended Mata as one of the most destructive and skilled ball carriers and defenders in global rugby, underscoring how his physical presence and ball-carrying capabilities are pivotal to the team’s playing style.
Mata himself expressed enthusiasm for remaining with the Bears, citing the support and belief he has felt from coaches, teammates, and fans since his arrival. He reiterated the club’s ambitious goals and his desire to contribute to achieving special milestones. “Playing in front of the Bears fans at Ashton Gate is something I really enjoy, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead,” he said.
With Mata committed to the Bears for another season, the team looks poised to build on their recent successes and continue striving for honors in upcoming competitions.
