The Pacific Islands Forum Troika Leaders convened their first in-person meeting of 2026 in Brisbane, Australia, highlighting their commitment to unity, regional solidarity, and collective leadership in the face of rising global challenges.

This significant meeting involved the participation of Jeremiah Manele, Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands; Surangel Whipps, the incoming Forum Chair and President of Palau; and Lord Fakafanua, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Tonga, who attended his first Troika meeting.

During their discussions, the Troika Leaders engaged in constructive dialogue aimed at following up on the actions from the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting. Key topics included progress related to the Review of the Regional Architecture, a strategic outlook for 2026, and impending regional and international engagements. This dialogue reinforced the Forum’s critical role as a political platform for Pacific Leaders, promoting shared objectives while respecting diverse viewpoints to enhance regional unity.

Prime Minister Manele expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Fakafanua’s participation, highlighting that his presence exemplifies the principles of continuity, inclusivity, and collective leadership that underpin the Forum. Secretary General Baron Waqa emphasized the meeting’s importance, asserting that the Troika continues to play a vital role in fostering unity and confidence in Forum processes.

“As awareness of regional and global issues grows, the Pacific Islands Forum remains a trusted venue for Pacific leaders to communicate openly, resolve differences, and pursue common goals under the spirit of ‘Iumi Tugeda’,” stated Waqa.

The Troika Leaders were further joined by Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen MP, to discuss preparations for COP31 and logistical arrangements for the Pre-COP 31 Meeting, alongside various Pacific-focused initiatives.

The outcomes and recommendations from the discussions will be communicated by the Forum Chair to all Forum Leaders, adhering to established processes. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the connections within the Pacific Islands community but also sets a promising direction for tackling pressing regional and global challenges ahead.
