Wilson, 69, experienced a life-changing moment yesterday as she underwent successful cataract surgery, restoring her vision completely. This remarkable event was facilitated by the “Bright Journey” Medical Mission from Guangdong Province, China, which is currently hosting a week-long program in Fiji focused on providing free cataract surgeries.
Cataracts, which cloud the lens of the eye, can lead to blurred and dim vision, significantly impacting one’s quality of life. This year’s initiative marks a decade since the launch of the “Bright Journey” project, aligning with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji. The medical team is actively inviting individuals in the community suffering from cataracts to visit their free clinic in Suva.
After her surgery, Ms. Wilson shared her experience with the media, revealing that she first noticed her eyesight declining in July. “We came to see this doctor for a review and were asked to come back again because of this team from China. We had no idea we would be chosen to take part in this surgery. The Lord chose it,” she said, reflecting on how her vision had declined to the extent that she needed help to walk outside.
Filled with gratitude, Ms. Wilson highlighted how thankful she was for the medical team and expressed excitement about spending quality time with her granddaughter, Daisy. She has been advised to take a month for recovery, during which she must avoid direct contact with her eyes.
The advanced techniques utilized by the Chinese medical team can restore vision in just a few minutes, offering a transformative solution for many individuals grappling with cataracts. Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health, underscored the program’s significance, noting the country currently lacks the specialized equipment and expertise for such procedures. He urged Fijians to seize the opportunity presented by the medical team’s visit.
The “Bright Journey” team, based at the Pacific Eye Institute near CWM Hospital in Suva, has made a substantial impact on the lives of numerous Fijians. Many patients from previous campaigns have shared their transformative stories, highlighting the initiative’s vital role in improving community health and individual well-being. With ongoing support from international medical teams, the future holds great promise for those facing vision challenges, as access to essential healthcare continues to expand.
