Youth advocate and human rights activist Avenai Serutabua recently highlighted the increasing disparities in opportunities between rural and urban youths. In a statement, Serutabua emphasized that while discussions about equality dominate the conversation, the reality is that not everyone begins from the same position or has the same access to resources and opportunities based on their location.
“Most of the time we like to believe rural and urban youths are offered the same chances, but that’s not always the reality,” he stated. Serutabua pointed out that rural youths frequently miss out on essential resources and support, which exacerbates their situation compared to their urban counterparts. He championed the concept of equity, advocating for a system where every individual gets a fair shot based on specific needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
To bridge this gap, he stressed the importance of bringing resources, programs, jobs, education, and support directly to rural areas. “I really hope we see more efforts to bring programs… especially to those who live afar from locations like Nadogotuki in Savusavu, Nakida in Naitasiri, and Namoli in Navosa,” Serutabua expressed. By empowering these communities and addressing their unique challenges, he believes transformative change is possible, benefiting not just the youths but also contributing to the strength of entire communities.
This message resonates with the ongoing challenges faced by rural areas in Fiji, as highlighted by various recent articles discussing educational inequities and infrastructure deficits. For instance, teachers from rural schools have voiced the need for increased funding and resources to ensure that their students receive equitable support. The disparity is not only evident in education but also manifests in the need for better infrastructure and opportunities for economic development in these areas.
The hope for a better future lies in the collective efforts of government, local communities, and advocacy groups to address these issues effectively. A focus on localized support and resources could pave the way for a more equitable and empowered future for rural youths throughout Fiji. As more voices join this critical conversation, there is optimism that meaningful changes can be achieved, promoting a more inclusive environment for all.
