Brewers Welcome DL Hall Back: Can He Spark a Season Turnaround?

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the reinstatement of left-handed pitcher DL Hall from the 60-day injured list, marking an important return as the team navigates a tumultuous season. The club recently adjusted its 40-man roster, having designated right-hander Joel Payamps for assignment, which allowed for Hall’s return. In a corresponding move, righty Logan Henderson has been sent down to Triple-A Nashville.

Hall has been sidelined since February due to a lat strain, which led to his placement on the injured list shortly after the Brewers signed pitching veteran Jose Quintana in early March. Initially, the expectation was for Hall to return around late May, and he has successfully completed a rehab assignment, making four starts as he worked his way back to full health.

The Brewers’ pitching rotation has faced considerable challenges this year, exacerbated by the injuries to key players such as Brandon Woodruff, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, and others like Aaron Civale and Nestor Cortes. Although the situation has begun to stabilize recently with Civale and Ashby rejoining the roster, Ashby has transitioned to the bullpen rather than starting.

With Hall’s return, he has the opportunity to establish himself as a consistent presence in the rotation, an achievement he has struggled to secure in the past due to injuries. Notably, the Brewers acquired Hall in a trade with the Orioles that involved sending Corbin Burnes to Baltimore. Despite being a former top prospect, injuries have limited Hall to only 76 major league innings since his debut in 2022.

As the Brewers look to climb back into playoff contention, they currently stand at 26-28, trailing behind the playoffs by 4.5 games. This scenario opens possibilities for the Brewers to consider trading some of their veteran pitchers, especially as they have capable replacements emerging in Henderson, Tobias Myers, and Jacob Misiorowski. Players like Freddy Peralta, who is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, and impending free agents including Woodruff, Civale, and Cortes, could potentially be on the trading block.

Securing some favorable trades this summer might not only help the Brewers bolster other areas of the team but also grant younger pitchers greater opportunities to thrive at the major league level. With Hall back in the mix and other pitchers returning from injury, there is a sense of renewed hope for the team as they prepare for the coming weeks.
