Milwaukee Brewers infielder Caleb Durbin made a heartfelt return to Fond du Lac on Thursday to celebrate Caleb Durbin Day with the Dock Spiders, a team he fondly remembers from his early baseball career. Reflecting on his past experiences, Durbin shared, “Really good memories here… I really enjoyed my time here, and it’s good being back.”
Durbin was a key player in the Dock Spiders’ triumph during their 2020 championship run and the 2021 season in which the team set the Northwoods League record for most stolen bases in a single season. He was initially drafted by the Atlanta Braves during that impactful 2021 season but later became part of a trade to the Yankees and subsequently to the Brewers in a deal involving All-Star pitcher Devin Williams.
Commenting on the development opportunities provided by the Northwoods League, Durbin noted, “This league does a really good job at preparing you for the next level.” He highlighted the competition, wood bat play, and the demanding schedule that mimics that of minor league baseball, stating it serves players well in their professional journey.
The Dock Spiders, along with fellow team Green Bay Rockers, showcase some of the best collegiate baseball talent and are part of a prestigious 24-team league that has produced nearly 400 Major League alumni. Local families support the players by hosting them during the summer, creating a familial atmosphere. Durbin’s host dad, Mike Nolan, expressed the close bond formed, saying, “It’s just an extended part of the family.”
Notably, Nolan opted not to host a player this year due to the Brewers’ busy schedule, yet he remains close to Durbin, who spent time at their home just before the event. Nolan expressed pride in watching Durbin’s growth from college player to Major Leaguer, describing it as “a real fun ride for the family.”
