Brentford Signs Rising Star Fábio Carvalho: What’s Next for the Young Midfielder?

Brentford has secured the signing of Fábio Carvalho from Liverpool on a five-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year.

The attacking midfielder participated in 21 matches for Liverpool since his arrival in 2022. He showcased his skills during the recent pre-season tour of the United States, netting goals in victories against Arsenal and Manchester United.

Carvalho made his move to Liverpool after a standout season with Fulham, where he scored 10 goals and provided eight assists at the age of 19 during their Championship-winning campaign in 2021/22.

Last season, he was loaned out to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and Hull City in the Championship. At Hull, he excelled, scoring nine goals in 20 appearances towards the end of the season.

Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, shared his thoughts on the new signing: “Fábio is a player with numerous qualities. He can operate in various attacking roles within a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, with his optimal position likely being as a number 10 or cutting in from the left.

“He excels offensively, demonstrating great ball skills, the ability to bypass defenders, facilitate opportunities, and finish chances. We lack players like him in our squad, and he will bring an added dimension to our team.

“His work ethic under pressure is impressive, and he also embodies the right attitude and cultural fit for the club. We are excited to welcome him and see how he will help advance the team.”

Carvalho, originally from Portugal, was part of Benfica’s youth academy before relocating to London with his family at the age of 11. He played for Balham prior to joining Fulham in 2015, where he made his first-team debut during the 2020/21 season at the age of 18, scoring his first goal in a 3-1 defeat against Southampton.

The following season, he made 36 Championship appearances, contributing to 18 goals as Fulham clinched the title. His impressive performance prompted a transfer to Liverpool, where he played 21 matches and scored three goals in his debut year, including a last-minute winner against Newcastle United at Anfield.

Carvalho was loaned to RB Leipzig at the start of the last season, returning after making nine Bundesliga appearances. He then joined Hull City for the latter half of the season, scoring nine times in 20 games as they narrowly missed the play-offs.

During Liverpool’s pre-season tour in America, Carvalho played in all three matches and scored against both Arsenal and Manchester United.
