Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) and Breeze Airways are proudly commemorating a successful first year of collaboration as the airline celebrates its one-year anniversary serving the Historic New Bern area this May. Breeze Airways initiated its nonstop service to Orlando, Florida, and Hartford, Connecticut, on May 24, 2024, witnessing consistent demand that underscores the region’s increasing need for expanded air travel options. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, these two destinations have quickly risen to become the top two markets for passenger generation at EWN.
Airport Director Andrew Shorter expressed enthusiasm about Breezes’ inaugural year, highlighting the community’s robust support and the demand for new travel alternatives in Eastern North Carolina. The airline has successfully provided over 55,000 arriving and departing seats through more than 400 flight operations within the past year, facilitating access to two of the region’s most popular destinations. This expansion not only enhances connectivity but also fosters significant economic and tourism opportunities for Historic New Bern and its vicinity.
David Neeleman, founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, noted that their mission to connect underserved or unserved cities has certainly been fulfilled in New Bern, as they witness rising demand from EWN. Passengers have welcomed the airline’s “Nice Low Cost Carrier” model, which offers an elevated travel experience at accessible prices.
Shorter conveyed optimism about the future, emphasizing their pride in having Breeze within their growing network. Breeze Airways marked its entry into New Bern as its 50th market, operating a fuel-efficient 137-seat Airbus A220.
This successful partnership has flourished due to the combined efforts of key community organizations, including Craven County Government, the Craven 100 Alliance, and the Craven County Tourism Development Authority. Melissa Riggle, Executive Director for Visit New Bern Tourism Development Authority, noted that as interest in traveling and relocating to Eastern North Carolina surges, Breeze Airways is simplifying air travel to the region from New England and Central Florida, creating numerous fans of the area’s hospitality.
Jeff Wood, Economic Development Director of Craven County, remarked that this alliance with Breeze represents a significant advancement in enhancing transportation access and bolstering economic development in the region.
Andrew Shorter concluded with gratitude towards all involved in this thriving partnership, including community leaders and construction crews responsible for terminal expansions at EWN, noting that their collaborative efforts have positioned EWN as a highlight among regional airports.
