Breece Hall, the running back for the New York Jets, is reflecting on his career thus far and admits he has certain reservations about his current standing. With teammates from his draft class, Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson, recently securing significant contract extensions, Hall finds himself in a different position as he is set to hit unrestricted free agency after the season.
Though Hall acknowledges his achievements over three seasons, he feels he has not proven enough to warrant a long-term commitment from the franchise. “I’m not really expecting it before the season,” Hall stated, citing the arrival of a new head coach and general manager, which adds pressure for him to continuously prove his value in practice.
Last season, Hall experienced a shift in workload due to the addition of Braelon Allen and the increased passing attempts stemming from quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ return from injury. His rushing yards (876), receiving yards (483), and efficiency (4.2 yards per carry) all took a dip compared to the previous year. Despite this, Hall remains adamant about his capabilities as a three-down back, feeling the urgency to perform well this season.
Under the guidance of coach Aaron Glenn, who plans to use a running back committee that includes Hall, Allen, and Isaiah Davis, Hall believes this setup can benefit the team. He trusts the run scheme put forth by offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and feels more aligned with the objectives of the offense, stating, “I think it fits our backs more. It makes a lot more sense to the guys up front and the reasoning why we’re doing everything.”
As Hall prepares for the season, he aims to shift the narrative from “potential” to proven excellence, focusing on performance and teamwork. His drive to succeed and the positive adjustment in coaching strategies might set the stage for a noteworthy year.
With the emergence of running quarterbacks like Justin Fields, the Jets’ running attack has the potential to become a formidable offensive component that Hall hopes to capitalize on. His determination and commitment could be pivotal in not only securing his future with the Jets but also in elevating the team’s performance as a whole.
