On this Wednesday, the President of the Federal Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, officially promulgated a law designating April 12 as the “Day of Celebration of Brazil-Israel Friendship.” This legislation, which received unanimous approval in the Senate, was not sanctioned by the executive branch in time, leading to its parliamentary promulgation. Alcolumbre emphasized the historical, cultural, and social contributions of the Jewish community in Brazil, noting that these connections strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance mutual understanding among democratic, diverse societies open to dialogue.
In another significant decision, the Senate approved, by a vote of 41 to 33, a complementary bill to increase the number of seats in the Chamber of Deputies from 513 to 531. This adjustment reflects population growth in certain states and will result in nine federative units gaining between 1 and 4 deputies, without any states losing representation. Senator Weverton from Maranhão’s PDT party advocated for this change, highlighting that the country’s population has grown significantly over the past 40 years, yet the number of deputies has remained unchanged.
These developments underscore the Brazilian Senate’s commitment to enhancing representation and fostering international relationships, positioning the country for collaborative growth and understanding.
