The Atlanta Braves have announced a significant addition to their roster, securing closer Robert Suarez with a three-year contract worth $45 million. The agreement, confirmed on Thursday, stipulates that Suarez will earn $13 million in the first season and $16 million in each of the following two years. In a commendable gesture, Suarez will also donate 1% of his salary to the Braves’ foundation, reinforcing his commitment to the community.
At 34 years old, Suarez has spent his entire four-year Major League Baseball career with the San Diego Padres. In the 2025 season, he made an impressive 70 appearances, achieving a career-high of 40 saves — a feat that led the National League. His consistent performance over the years has not only solidified his reputation as one of the top closers in the league but also resulted in back-to-back All-Star selections.
With 76 saves since 2024, Suarez holds the record for the most in MLB, surpassing Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians by five saves. Prior to joining the Braves, he opted out of a remaining two-year, $16 million contract with the Padres and did not receive a qualifying offer, which means there is no draft pick compensation required for the Braves.
The Braves’ acquisition of Suarez is poised to enhance their bullpen significantly. This move complements their recent re-signing of Raisel Iglesias, who has amassed 96 saves over the last three seasons with Atlanta. Reports indicate that Suarez will take on the role of setup man, ensuring Iglesias continues as the team’s primary closer.
As the Braves continue to strengthen their roster, they are positioning themselves as serious contenders for the upcoming season. The strategic addition of a highly regarded reliever like Suarez, combined with their existing talent, offers optimism for the team’s future successes on the field.
