Earl “Chuck” Kohler, a 100-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor, recalls the harrowing day when Japanese forces attacked on December 7, 1941. At only 17 years of age, Kohler refused to obey orders and instead opted to fight back against the invading bombers. This daring decision epitomizes the bravery displayed by many young Americans who faced the shocking assault, which resulted in the deaths of 2,403 Americans and marked a pivotal moment in World War II.

As bombs rained down, turning the peaceful harbor into a scene of chaos and destruction, Kohler sprinted to gather ammunition and manned a machine gun, determined to defend his comrades. In his own words, he wanted his family and country to know he was fighting, not hiding, sharing a sentiment that resonates deeply with the spirit of that generation.

Kohler’s life before the Navy was shaped by modest beginnings as a sharecropper’s son in Minnesota, where he learned the importance of resilience and facing challenges head-on. His desire to serve arose from a sense of duty rather than a thirst for adventure, reflecting the values instilled in him while growing up.

Today, Kohler stands as one of only 16 known Pearl Harbor survivors, a testament to the dwindling number of individuals who lived through that historic day. This Saturday, commemorative events will take place at Pearl Harbor, gathering thousands to honor the Greatest Generation and their sacrifices during one of America’s darkest chapters.

Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, emphasized their commitment to remembering those who served on that fateful day. They aim to carry the legacy and stories of fallen heroes, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Other survivors, including Ken Stevens and Ira “Ike” Schab Jr., are expected to participate in the 83rd anniversary events in Oahu, highlighting the ongoing importance of remembrance. Schab, who serves as an emotional bridge to lost comrades, expressed the need to honor those who could not make the journey due to their passing.

The attack on Pearl Harbor, which included a devastating surprise of nearly 400 aircraft and multiple naval vessels, left an indelible mark on history. The memories of that day still evoke strong emotions, reflecting the sacrifices made by servicemen like Kohler and the camaraderie that defined the era.

While Kohler will not be in Hawaii for the commemoration, he will be participating in a ceremony in California, continuing his legacy of honoring those who fought and fell during the attack. He remains a beacon of hope and remembrance, urging us to “Remember us,” a sentiment that underlines the significance of shared history.

As the Pearl Harbor anniversary approaches, it serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and courage of those who faced unimaginable challenges during World War II. Their legacy can inspire future generations to embrace the same spirit of bravery in the face of adversity.
