Hadley Duvall, a 12-year-old from Owensboro, Kentucky, who became pregnant after being raped by her stepfather, shared her powerful story during the Democratic National Committee (DNC) event in Chicago on Monday night. Her experience, which led her to become an outspoken advocate for abortion rights, reached a national audience.

Duvall first gained attention last year when she appeared in an advertisement supporting Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear during his reelection bid. On the DNC stage, she addressed the issue of total abortion bans, referencing former President Donald Trump’s characterization of them as a “beautiful thing.” She challenged that notion by asking, “What is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent’s child?” Her statement elicited a noticeable gasp from the audience.

Having suffered a miscarriage, Duvall emphasized the critical need for options for survivors like herself, especially as many states, including Kentucky, have implemented strict abortion bans following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. She expressed solidarity with other survivors facing similar situations, assuring them that they are seen and heard. Duvall declared her support for Kamala Harris, who has pledged to sign a national law to restore abortion rights.

During the event, Duvall also introduced Governor Beshear, who focused his speech on the importance of protecting reproductive rights for women.
