Brandon Novak has officially taken the helm as the new head football coach at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. After an extensive 25-year coaching career at St. John’s University, including 12 years as the defensive coordinator, Novak was encouraged to apply for the position by Loras Athletic Director Denise Udelhofen.

Impressed by the vision that Udelhofen and Loras President Michael Doyle articulated for the football program, Novak decided to pursue the opportunity. “I was sold on their vision for the football program right away,” he said, highlighting his enthusiasm for the potential of Loras football, which has struggled recently, finishing the last season with a disappointing 3-7 record and not having a winning season since 2008.

Novak recognizes the challenges ahead, noting that the Duhawks have faced tough competition against teams like Wartburg and Coe. “They’ve been right with those programs at halftime in a lot of those games, but haven’t found that consistency throughout an entire game,” he observed. His aim is to establish a solid foundation and foster a new energy for the program.

Former St. John’s linebacker Hayden Sanders is set to join Novak’s staff, though the complete coaching team remains to be finalized. Novak mentioned the logistical aspects of the transition, indicating that he is fully engaged in preparing for this new role.

In reflecting on his time at St. John’s, where he was a standout linebacker and a two-time first-team All-American, Novak acknowledged how difficult it was to leave. He expressed gratitude towards head coach Gary Fasching for their supportive communication during this transition. Fasching referred to Novak as someone who made a significant impact on the program, stating, “He has made our football program better.”

Novak’s family has been supportive of his decision as they prepare to relocate to Dubuque next summer. He emphasized that this opportunity aligns with his long-held dream of becoming a head coach. Echoing the sentiments of his new role, he described Loras as a place where he sees the potential to elevate the football program, noting the similarities with St. John’s in terms of values and community spirit.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Novak is excited yet aware of the challenges ahead. He looks forward to building a competitive program, tapping into the passion of Loras’ alumni, and making his mark in collegiate football.
