Brandi Carlile Explores Identity on New Album Returning to Myself

Following the success of her 2018 album, By the Way, I Forgive You, Brandi Carlile has worn many hats: the underdog singer making her mark in mainstream music, a champion for legends like Elton John and Joni Mitchell, an accomplished author with her 2021 bestselling memoir, and a collaborator in the supergroup the Highwomen, as well as through her production work with artists such as Brandy Clark and Lucius. Yet, amidst these pursuits, the essence of Brandi as an artist and individual seemed overshadowed.

Her latest release, Returning to Myself, is a powerful exploration of her identity as both an artist and a person. The album serves as a poignant statement that not only represents Carlile’s best work since her previous breakout but also delves into new sonic territories, showcasing her growth in vocal texture, melody creation, and production skills alongside notable collaborators Aaron Dessner and Andrew Watt.

Among the standout tracks is “No One Knows Us,” a deeply personal centerpiece which reflects on nostalgia with lines like “Eighties movies and Everclear/What if we’re gay?”. This song embodies the seamless collaboration of Dessner and Watt. Other noteworthy tracks include the captivating melody of the soft rocker “Human,” and the tender acoustic ballad “Anniversary,” alongside “You Without Me,” an emotional examination of parenting inspired by her recent work with Elton John, where she poignantly sings about the heaviness of letting go.

Returning to Myself reaches its peak when Carlile remains focused on her personal journey. However, some tracks like the tribute to Joni Mitchell, titled “Joni,” tend to dilute this intimate theme. The Eighties-style rocker “Church & State,” while perfect for future live performances, feels slightly disjointed compared to the cohesive atmosphere of the rest of the album.

One of the most striking tracks, “A War With Time,” subtly weaves the album’s core theme into the narrative of a youthful experience in New York: “When you find yourself alone,” Carlile sings, “retrace your steps and come back home.” This encapsulates the introspective essence of her latest work, drawing listeners into her journey of self-discovery.

Overall, Returning to Myself not only marks a return but an evolution for Brandi Carlile, revealing deeper layers of her artistry while inviting fans to connect with her on a more intimate level.
