Bradley Cooper captivated audiences at the closing night of the New York Film Festival with a heartfelt introduction to his latest directorial project, “Is This Thing On?” The film, completed just months prior to the festival, was showcased in an unfinished print that managed to win over the crowd immediately. This project serves as a poignant love letter to both the city Cooper holds dear and the stand-up comedy scene where he found inspiration.
In the film, Will Arnett portrays a man grappling with the trials of a long marriage, finding solace and a means of expression through stand-up comedy. Cooper emphasized that Arnett was the perfect choice for the lead role, highlighting their longstanding friendship and collaborative spirit. The duo, along with writer Mark Chappell, worked closely to bring this narrative to life.
Reflecting on their bond, Cooper shared how their friendship has persisted through the years. “We met in New York City, and I thought to myself, ‘That guy’s tall, I don’t want to fight that guy,’” he remarked, fondly recalling how their lives intertwined since then. Cooper expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create art with someone he trusts, stating that the film captures Arnett “baring his soul” through his character, Alex.
Cooper also touched on his love for New York, despite his Philadelphia roots. He reminisced about the magic of the city, recalling his experiences as a graduate student in the late 90s studying at the New School. “New York was so specific. It had that magic, and really still has that magic,” he noted, aiming to encapsulate that essence in the film.
Alongside Arnett, Laura Dern plays his character’s wife, Tess. The film represents Cooper’s third venture as a director, and he acknowledged the vital support of Searchlight Pictures and their team. He praised Matthew Greenfield, head of the studio, for his exceptional communication and commitment to the project, allowing the film to find a home at the festival.
“Is This Thing On?” is set to hit limited theaters on December 19, promising to resonate with audiences through its exploration of friendship, vulnerability, and the enduring spirit of New York City.
