New Boston Celtics fans may know Brad Stevens primarily as a distinguished executive, but it is important to remember his previous role as head coach of the Celtics up until just five years ago. Stevens, who was named the 2024 NBA Executive of the Year, recently highlighted his coaching roots while engaging in some on-court training with Celtics star Jayson Tatum on Friday.

As the Celtics prepared to face the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, they took the opportunity to practice at Hinkle Fieldhouse, a revered venue that holds significant meaning for Stevens. During his six-year tenure as the head coach at Butler University, Stevens led the Bulldogs to impressive achievements, including back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2010 and 2011.

Tatum, who developed a strong bond with Stevens during his coaching years, was seen working closely with him at the practice session. A clip from this workout showcased Stevens actively participating by passing to Tatum, who executed a powerful dunk over Celtics assistant coach Tony Dobbins. Although Tatum’s dunks are a familiar sight for Celtics’ fans, this particular moment was especially poignant given that the six-time All-Star is currently recovering from a ruptured Achilles, an injury that resulted in him missing all 29 of Boston’s games this season.

While the uncertainty of his return looms—meaning he could potentially miss the entire 82-game slate—both Tatum and Stevens are displaying a strong commitment to the rehabilitation process, fueling hopes for a successful recovery. Celtics fans are undoubtedly eager to see Tatum back on the court, and Stevens’ involvement in his training is a promising sign of progress.
